Patricia Mayhew | Pysanky
Ukrainian Easter Eggs using Pysanky technique involves a series of
wax and dyes.
My first introduction to the art was through my Ukrainian Grandmother. The church ladies would gather together during Lent to create their works of art. The eggs were displayed on the altar at Easter. And on Easter Sunday you were gifted an egg. My parents were gifted an egg and as children we weren’t allowed to touch it. And of course that made it very sacred. Fast forward to adulthood and quarantine, I decided it was my turn to learn the art of Pysanky.
Each egg is unique and historical with meaningful symbols and colors. My inspiration comes from within as I rarely have a plan when I am in front of an egg. I just see what happens once all the wax is removed to reveal the gift that is presented underneath.
I am proud to continue this Ukrainian heritage and I hope these eggs will bring you joy.
